Invidious Comparisons: Ranking and Selection as Compound Decisions

چکیده
There is an innate human tendency, one might call it the “league table mentality,” to construct rankings. Schools, hospitals, sports teams, movies, and myriad other objects are ranked even though their inherent multi‐dimensionality would suggest that—at best—only partial orderings were possible. We consider a large class of elementary ranking problems in which we observe noisy, scalar measurements merit for n potentially heterogeneous precision asked select group that “most meritorious.” The problem naturally formulated compound decision framework Robbins's (1956) empirical Bayes theory, but also exhibits close connections recent literature on multiple testing. nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator mixture models (Kiefer Wolfowitz (1956)) employed optimal selection rules. Performance rules evaluated simulations application U.S. kidney dialysis centers.

Maximum Selection and Ranking under Noisy Comparisons
We consider (ǫ, δ)-PAC maximum-selection and ranking for general probabilistic models whose comparisons probabilities satisfy strong stochastic transitivity and stochastic triangle inequality. Modifying the popular knockout tournament, we propose a maximum-selection algorithm that uses O (
متن کاملRanking, Selection and Multiple Comparisons in Computer Simulation
We present a state-of-the-art review of ranking, selection and multiple-comparison procedures that are used to compare system designs via computer simulation. We describe methods for four classes of problems: screening a large number of system designs, selecting the best system, comparing all systems to a standard and comparing alternatives to a default. Rather than give a comprehensive review ...
متن کاملRanking and Selection as Stochastic Control
Under a Bayesian framework, we formulate the fully sequential sampling and selection decision in statistical ranking and selection as a stochastic control problem, and derive the associated Bellman equation. Using value function approximation, we derive an approximately optimal allocation policy. We show that this policy is not only computationally efficient but also possesses both one-step-ahe...
متن کاملInvidious Comparisons: Imagining a Psychology of Race and Gender Beyond Differences
Within psychology there is a longstanding debate concerning whether large, fundamental differences between races and genders exist. Much of this research involves comparisons that are invidious (offensively discriminating) and supports a political ideology in which members of different groups are held to be fundamentally different, alien, and therefore destined to different spheres. In this pap...
متن کاملActive Ranking using Pairwise Comparisons
This paper examines the problem of ranking a collection of objects using pairwise comparisons (rankings of two objects). In general, the ranking of n objects can be identified by standard sorting methods using n log2 n pairwise comparisons. We are interested in natural situations in which relationships among the objects may allow for ranking using far fewer pairwise comparisons. Specifically, w...
